"Three top European dancers take off on a global quest to find the beating heart and cultural roots of street dance. Catch Dance Around the World, 11 November at 11:05pm"
In January of 2019, me, alongside nutcase 1 Suzette Brissett and nutcase 2 Kymberlee Jay, embarked on a 6-week adventure across Rio De Janeiro, Johannesburg and New York City to create the “Dance Around The World” documentary for Channel 4.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We filmed our exploration of these magnificent cities - and the wonderful people within them - with a tiny (yet mighty) production crew from Knickerbockerglory TV.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The aim of this documentary series was to learn whether informal dance styles - particularly street and hip hop - were still being practised in these areas of the world, and, what that looked like in the current socio-economic and political climate. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
We ended up discovering how people were using this art form to define their identity, strengthen their community, voice their opinion and overcome considerable challenges. It was an absolute honour to listen to, and learn from the incredible artists we met along the way. I will be writing more in depth articles on each city we visited after the episodes have aired.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Now, a year and 9 months later, Channel 4 has blown the dust off of our footage and given the thumbs up for broadcast ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The first episode airs on Wednesday the 11th November at 11:05pm (yep, right after “First Dates” and right before your eyes begin to droop). The 2nd episode goes live on 18th November and the third and final episode on the 25th November. If you can't make that, watch it later on 4 on Demand.
Let me know what you think! #DanceAroundTheWorld
